About Us

Lusenhop Fine Art specializes in American paintings, drawings, sculpture and prints by noted American artists who worked between 1920 and 1980. Though the gallery is based in Chicago, our clients include private, corporate and museum collections from across the United States. Our areas of expertise include African-American art, American Scene painting and sculpture, Midwest Regionalism, Social Realism, Non-objective art of the 1930s and 1940s, and Chicago art and artists including those associated with The New Bauhaus and Institute of Design. Women artists are also of particular interest to us, and our inventory always includes pieces by historically significant female artists.

As “secondary market” art dealers, we focus on buying and selling works by artists that we, and our clients, are most passionate about. Much of our time is spent acquiring work from estates and private collections in order to bring significant and undiscovered artworks to the market. We encourage collectors and estate representatives to contact us when considering putting exceptional pieces up for sale. When it is most beneficial to work with a collector or an estate on a consignment basis, we can structure a short or long term representation that maximizes the financial benefit to the consignor. With few exceptions, we only accept consignments valued over twenty-five hundred dollars.

Every artwork we offer to our clients is guaranteed to be as we describe it. We adhere to strict professional and ethical standards when acquiring, consigning presenting, conserving, framing and describing works we have for sale. Arrangements can be made so that prospective buyers have the opportunity to examine pieces in person before committing to a purchase, regardless of the buyer’s location in the country. The condition and provenance of an artwork are important factors in determining the relative importance and market value of a piece, so we take pride in providing a full history on every work, whenever possible. Finally, since we tend to own the artworks we offer, and because we stand behind the art we sell, we often accept artworks, formerly acquired from us, as payment toward new purchases.
David Lusenhop has been a full-time dealer of American painting of the early and middle twentieth century since 1989. Prior to that, he was the Assistant Director of the Richmond Art Museum in Richmond, Indiana. From the fall of 2002 until December of 2006, David was the Director of Chicago’s Robert Henry Adams Fine Art, Inc., where many of his projects were noted and favorably reviewed in national publications including The New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, Art in America and Art News. David has worked as a guest curator for art museums and public art centers, and has contributed to scholarly publications that focus on American art of the 1930s and 1940s. David has been a guest on Chicago Public Radio and, in 2006, appeared on Chicago Public Television discussing the history of African-American art.

Lusenhop Fine Art’s Director, Melissa Azzi, is a graduate of the University of Chicago and was awarded a Masters in Arts Administration from The Art Institute of Chicago. Melissa interned at Sotheby’s in Chicago and went on to work in commercial galleries including the Chicago branch of New York based Hollis Taggart Galleries. From the fall of 2003 until January of 2007, Melissa Azzi was the Assistant Director of Robert Henry Adams Fine Art, Inc.

We, at Lusenhop Fine Art, thank all of the collectors, artists and friends who, through their support and encouragement, have allowed us the privilege of working in our chosen field. There is no greater joy for us than sharing our passion for the art, and for the artists who contributed so much to the history and culture of the United States in the last century.
